How long do gutters last by material?

How long do gutters last and when should they be replaced?

Lifespan depends almost entirely on material. Vinyl lasts about 10 to 20 years. Galvanized steel lasts 15 to 20 years before the coating wears and rust sets in. Aluminum lasts 20 to 30 years.

Zinc lasts 50 years or more thanks to its self-healing patina. Copper is the longest-lived, at 50 to 100 years, and is often still working on century-old homes.

Maintenance extends all of these numbers. Keeping gutters clean, fixing sagging hangers, and clearing downspouts prevents the standing water and ice buildup that shortens service life.

Signs it is time to replace: persistent leaks at seams, sagging or pulling away from the fascia, rust or cracks, peeling exterior paint, or water pooling near the foundation after rain.
