How many feet of gutters and downspouts does my house need?

How do I figure out how many feet of gutters and how many downspouts I need?

Most homes need about 150 to 250 linear feet of gutter. A small single-level ranch with a simple rectangular footprint may need only 100 to 150 feet, while a large two-story home can need 250 feet or more.

To measure, add up the length of every roof edge that has an eave (the horizontal lower edges where water runs off). Gable ends that come to a point usually do not get gutters. Our gutter length tool walks you through this with your home's dimensions.

For downspouts, plan on one for roughly every 35 feet of gutter, and at least one at each end of a long run. Homes in rainy climates may want them closer together. Each downspout carries water from the gutter down to the ground or drainage.

Getting the count right matters for both budget and performance. Too few downspouts and your gutters overflow in heavy rain even if the gutters themselves are sized correctly.
